Corporate structure
The Australian Sports Commission (ASC) is responsible for implementing the Government's national sports policy. Working together with other sporting organisations at all levels, the two delivery arms of the ASC - the AIS and Sport Performance and Development Group promote the basic sports philosophy of the Australian Government: Excellence and Participation.
The ASC has developed an organisational and evaluation design based on a hierarchy of interdependent outcomes. The overarching goal (articulated as the mission statement) is dependent on achieving the three major objectives drawn from the Australian Sports Commission Act, which in turn rely on successful implementation of the seven major strategies described in the Strategic Plan.
The Commission is divided into seven primary groups:
Australian Institute of Sport (AIS)
The AIS is the Australian Government’s national institute of sport. It is recognised as a world centre of excellence for the training and development of elite athletes and coaches, providing innovative and integrated support services to enhance athlete and program performance. The AIS manages 35 scholarship sports programs. It provides expert coaching, state of the art facilities and equipment, world-class integrated sports science and medical services, athlete welfare services and implementation of the technical requirements for sporting success.
Sport Performance and Development
The Sport Performance and Development division supports the development of the Australian sport system from the grassroots community level to high performance sport, by giving national sporting organisations access to advice and resources, including funding, policy development advice and management models, education, emerging information technologies and evaluation frameworks.
The division also delivers the National Talent Identification and Development program and the National Coach and Athlete Career and Education program. In addition, the division services the National Coaching and Officiating Accreditation Schemes for National Sporting Organisations, coordinates all International Relations activities of the Commission and delivers on behalf of the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) the Australian Sports Outreach Program.
Corporate Services
The Corporate Services division is responsible for the integration of the Commission’s corporate operations as well as the provision of general services to sports and enhancement of the national sports information network. It is also responsible for the ASC’s Legal Services and Research and Corporate Planning branches.
Commercial and Facilities
The Commercial and Facilities division provides services to the other Divisions of the ASC in a client service environment. It administers the Australian Sports Foundation, manages and operates sporting / conference / accommodation facilities, generates off-budget revenue through commercial activities, and creates and maintains the buildings and infrastructure for the ASC.
Community Sport
The ASC's Community Sport division provides Australians from all backgrounds with increased opportunities to participate in inclusive structured physical activity, including sport.
We do this in many ways including running programs aimed at getting kids more active, making sport more accessible for people with disabilities, bringing structured sport into Indigenous communities, funding women to be involved in sport leadership and providing free resources to help develop community clubs.
We also work hand in hand with national sporting organisations, state and local governments, schools and community organisations. Together, we make sport more accessible, fun and safe for more Australians.
Financial Services
The Financial Services division is responsible for the ASC’s financial management, business support, accounts processing and financial reporting. The Financial Services area focuses on the provision of responsive and proactive support within the ASC while continuing to ensure that the ASC satisfies the Government’s financial management and accountability requirements.
