Nine Network
State of Origin 2010
0:00:26.730,0:00:31.960
Thank you! Thank you to the Sports Commission.
Congratulations to our other nominees.
0:00:31.960,0:00:35.800
This is a very humbling experience to be asked
by the Nine Network to come forward and accept
0:00:35.800,0:00:39.840
this award tonight because there are
so many people that have worked on the coverage,
0:00:39.840,0:00:43.510
not just in 2010, but I look down here to
my right and here’s Mike Gibson and I think
0:00:43.510,0:00:50.440
about the pioneers of State of Origin coverage
that goes back over 30 years. On behalf of
0:00:50.440,0:00:53.230
those who have worked over those 30 years,
I think it’s fair to say, it’s been a
0:00:53.230,0:00:57.620
privilege to cover State of Origin football.
At Channel Nine we don’t just have an attitude
0:00:57.620,0:01:02.980
that this is a great rugby league television
event, that this is just a great sporting
0:01:02.980,0:01:07.830
television event, we think it is just a great
event full stop. Each and every year and I’m
0:01:07.830,0:01:12.740
sure Mike can testify from his early days
as part of the coverage, the team sits together
0:01:12.740,0:01:16.740
and says well look, we can just point and
shoot, and it’s probably compelling anyway,
0:01:16.740,0:01:21.170
but how can we make it just that little bit
more special? How can we get the viewers closer?
0:01:21.170,0:01:26.770
And as years have gone by, we’ve just got
amazing access. And our thanks go to the very
0:01:26.770,0:01:31.420
talented athletes that we see playing State
of Origin, the Queensland, the NSW players,
0:01:31.420,0:01:35.930
the coaches for what they’ve enabled us
to do, the cameras.
0:01:35.930,0:01:41.060
We think back to the openers that Channel
Nine have done over 30 years, some win, some
0:01:41.060,0:01:45.700
hit the mark, some miss. We had Jack Gibson
the late super coach in a phone box outside
0:01:45.700,0:01:50.110
Artarmon train station one year playing the
role of Mission Impossible. We had five dollars
0:01:50.110,0:01:56.100
of pyrotechnics as he dropped a little walkman
recorder into a bin and it exploded and we
0:01:56.100,0:01:59.810
thought that was cutting edge at the time
and now we look back and think well that’s
0:01:59.810,0:02:05.450
a bit corny. But we have tried to do things
a little different and to entertain with just
0:02:05.450,0:02:08.080
an amazing product that is State of Origin
rugby league.
0:02:08.080,0:02:12.310
So our heartiest thanks to the players, the
athletes who have played. And if I could have
0:02:12.310,0:02:16.599
some licence and say this is not just for
the Nine Network’s efforts in 2010, this
0:02:16.599,0:02:20.790
is for 30 years of coverage of an outstanding
sporting event.
0:02:20.790,0:02:24.790
And finally, as it’s been said earlier tonight
by a number of people and indeed by the Sports
0:02:24.790,0:02:28.760
Minister, there’s no heavies in the room
from Channel Nine, but I can speak on behalf
0:02:28.760,0:02:32.650
of all those who worked on the 2010 coverage,
we’d actually do it for nothing, it’s
0:02:32.650,0:02:36.190
that much of a buzz. But as I say, don’t
go telling Dave Grinshaw that. Thank you.
0:02:36.190,0:02:36.650
Cheers.
