AIS Awards 2011
The 2011 AIS Awards recognised the outstanding achievements of AIS athletes and coaches over the past 12 months. The Awards were held on Thursday the 10th of November 2011 at the AIS Arena at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra.
The night celebrated many 2011 highlights including the announcement of:
- AIS Athlete of the Year - Anna Meares
- AIS Junior of the Year - Luke Durbridge
- AIS Coach of the Year - Ben Wordsworth
- AIS Team of the Year - Women's Team Sprint - Anna Meares and Kaarle McCulloch
- AIS Program of the Year - Track Cycling
This year, being the 30th anniversary of the AIS saw five athletes added to the prestigious ‘Best of The Best’.
The ‘Best of the Best’ concept was introduced in 2002 on the 21st anniversary of the AIS which saw, 21 athletes inducted. An additional four athletes were added to the list to mark the 25th anniversary of the AIS in 2006.
These athletes were chosen based on their commitment to their sport, their outstanding success at the elite level, and the way they have upheld the AIS values in all endeavours. These athletes epitomise the spirit of the AIS.
Their contribution is acknowledged on the wall of recognition located in the AIS Sports Visitors Centre, Canberra.
The five new athletes inducted at the 2011 AIS Awards are:
- Ricky Ponting, Cricket
- Anna Meares OAM, Track Cycling
- Jamie Dwyer OAM, Hockey
- Malolm Page OAM, Sailing
- Matthew Cowdery OAM, Paralympic Swimming
