The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) has a proud history of supporting the endeavours of Australian sporting champions.

AIS Awards

The AIS Awards, held at the Institute in Canberra in November, is the premier celebration of the sensational achievements made every year by AIS athletes with the support of the Institute’s world-class coaches and staff.

Award categories

  • AIS Athlete of the Year — recognises outstanding achievement by an individual AIS athlete.
  • AIS Junior Athlete of the Year — showcases the success of one of the AIS’s talented junior athletes.
  • AIS Team of the Year — celebrates the outstanding achievements by AIS athletes in a team sport. 
  • AIS Coach of the Year — honours the AIS coach who best excelled in all aspects of their coaching performance. 
  • AIS Program of the Year — showcases the AIS program that has best achieved outstanding athlete performances, developed innovative coaching techniques and provided an environment supportive of athlete development. 
  • AIS Scholarship Recognition Awards — recognises the athletes who have held Australian Institute of Sport scholarships for five, ten and 15 years.
  • AIS Sport Achievement Awards — celebrates outstanding individual achievements by AIS athletes during the previous year.
  • AIS Vocation Awards — highlights athletes who have managed their time and commitments to achieve both sporting and vocational excellence.
  • AIS Education Awards — recognises AIS athletes who have achieved academic success at the same time as balancing the demands of their AIS scholarships.

Memorial Awards

The Memorial Awards are presented during the AIS Awards to individual AIS athletes in memory of former Institute athletes and coaches whose lives have inspired countless Australian sportspeople.

  • Darren Smith Memorial Award for Road Cycling
  • Nathan Meade Memorial Award for Diving 
  • Brent Harding Memorial Award for Swimming 
  • Gary Knoke Memorial Award for Track and Field 
  • Ross Herbert Memorial Award for Golf 
  • Ben Mitchell Medal for AFL
  • Bob Staunton Memorial Award for Basketball
