Program of the Year

2011 - Track Cycling

Track Cycling
The year 2010 was a great one for track cycling, but it was just a warm-up. The team, from rising star Luke Durbridge to legend Anna Meares, put in outstanding performances at the 2011 UCI Track World Championships, with the unprecedented medal haul of eight gold, two silver and one bronze promising great things for 2012. Behind the scenes, the program remains competitive with a holistic approach to athlete and coach development. As well as providing coaching and leadership training, the program currently engages two PhD scholars to undertake research in sports science. Coaches and scientists are involved in a partnership with Monash University, which uses its wind tunnel facility to test the aerodynamic efficiency of riders and their equipment. Under the guidance of the head coaches Ian McKenzie and Gary West, athletes are put through their paces on the world championship standard track, and emerging talents from state institutes and academies are offered the opportunity to attend camps, gaining exposure to a world-class training and testing program. In Europe, road coach James Victor ensures the endurance male track athlete’s continue their all-year development through the AIS Road Program in Varese, Italy. As one of Australia’s most successful sports going into London, members of the cycling program are determined to ensure all is set to maximise their advantage.
