ACT Year 12 Certificate
Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Year 12 Certificate
The ACT secondary colleges curriculum is based on progressive assessment. There is no one end-of-year exam but a series of smaller exams, assignments and other work throughout the school year. Five streams of courses are offered:
- T courses (T = tertiary)
These courses have been nominated as being suitable preparation for higher education. - A courses (A = accredited)
These courses have been accepted by the ACT Education Department as being educationally sound and appropriate for students in years 11 and 12 who are not intending to apply for university entrance. - R courses (R = registered)
These courses tend to be less academically oriented and cover more pre-vocational, recreational and general interest courses. - E courses (E = employment)
These courses provide knowledge and skills directly relevant to a particular area of employment and/or further vocational education and training. - V courses (V = vocational)
These are vocational courses that use a combination of college education and on-the-job training in the workplace to deliver nationally recognised vocational qualifications.
Students are strongly advised to select as broad a range of subjects as possible, taking into consideration future career planning, for example, pre-requisite courses for universities or colleges usually include English and/or mathematics. Athletes are required to do four units per semester, as well as an External Sport Studies ( ESS). ESS is a unit specifically designed in agreement with ACT secondary board of studies to acknowledge the commitments associated in having an AIS Scholarship. ESS does not contribute to the final university admission index (UAI) score but is compulsory to obtain a year 12 certificate.
More information is in the college handbook, which is available from the school by calling 02 6205 7099 or checking their website at http://www.lakeonline.act.edu.au
