Amber Halliday
Well my name’s Amber Haliday and I’m an
Olympic rower, but I’ve recently turned
0:00:06.360,0:00:10.820
to cycling. I’ve finished studying; I’ve
got two degrees - media and psychology - from
0:00:10.820,0:00:14.769
the University of Adelaide. It was a little
bit hard to find work after I finished my
0:00:14.769,0:00:19.410
degrees, especially coming home from the Olympics.
A lot of people had led me to believe that
0:00:19.410,0:00:23.810
it would be really easy to walk into a job,
and I didn’t find it was like that at all.
0:00:23.810,0:00:28.109
The Athlete Career and Education Program back
in South Australia really helped me out and
0:00:28.109,0:00:35.109
they were the ones that helped me find my
first job after the Olympics in 2004.
0:00:35.420,0:00:40.000
The ACE Program is a great resource that’s
there for athletes during their career. They
0:00:40.000,0:00:44.960
run programs on time management and other
sorts of things; they are there as a sounding
0:00:44.960,0:00:50.730
board for maybe your career in the future
and the direction in which you want to go,
0:00:50.730,0:00:54.980
and they’re also heavily involved with elite
athlete friendly universities and they can
0:00:54.980,0:01:00.550
help make your education integrate with your
training program a lot better. And they’re
0:01:00.550,0:01:07.459
also there for a bit of transition support
at the end of your career. After 2004 Olympics,
0:01:07.459,0:01:12.810
I thought that was it for me but the ACE Co-ordinator
was still there helping me find a job and
0:01:12.810,0:01:18.420
trying to transition into the real world.
0:01:18.420,0:01:25.420
It’s just really important to prepare for
life after sport during sport by studying
0:01:25.899,0:01:30.240
or by working part-time; even getting out
there and getting work experience is really,
0:01:30.240,0:01:34.259
really important. If you think you’re going
to walk into a job straight after sport after
0:01:34.259,0:01:39.579
you’ve won a gold medal and retired on the
back of a cereal box, it doesn’t always
0:01:39.579,0:01:44.499
happen that way, so you’ve just got to prepare
early.
0:01:44.499,0:01:49.399
I certainly would recommend ACE to other athletes,
even if it’s just going in and having a
0:01:49.399,0:01:53.849
chat with the ACE Co-ordinator in your state
every now and then. It’s really good to
0:01:53.849,0:01:58.219
touch base and to get a second opinion on
where you’re headed in your education and
0:01:58.219,0:01:58.820
your career.
