Elise Rechichi
My name is Elise Rechichi. I’m from the
sport of sailing and I compete in the two-person
0:00:05.960,0:00:10.800
dinghy class. My sailing partner is Tessa
Parkinson and the boat that we sail within
0:00:10.800,0:00:15.150
that event is a 470, which is a 4.7 metre
dinghy.
0:00:15.150,0:00:20.830
Tess and I started sailing about 16 years
ago, both of us, but separately; and we started
0:00:20.830,0:00:26.759
competing together … at the end of 2003.
Our greatest achievement definitely has been
0:00:26.759,0:00:32.350
winning a medal, a gold medal at Beijing.
We had never been aiming to go to the Olympics
0:00:32.350,0:00:36.790
to be purely tourists; I think it’s too
tough of a road just to go to have a look.
0:00:36.790,0:00:40.380
We’d always been hoping for a medal and
it was amazing to come away with a gold medal,
0:00:40.380,0:00:46.560
and I still don’t really think it’s sunk
in; maybe taken it for granted a bit.
0:00:46.560,0:00:51.300
In sailing there’s a tendency for balance
to sort of be forgotten in terms of the nature
0:00:51.300,0:00:57.740
of the sport. So it is very hard to maintain
a sense of stability and balance. ACE has
0:00:57.740,0:01:02.850
really provided us with an avenue to seek
to have a greater sense of balance in our
0:01:02.850,0:01:06.999
life, and in the end it helps you with your
performance as well.
0:01:06.999,0:01:11.049
I think there’s probably a misconception
that to perform well you need to do whatever
0:01:11.049,0:01:16.969
your sport is 24/7, and Tess and I would certainly
support that is not conducive with getting
0:01:16.969,0:01:21.079
the outcome that you’re after because I
don’t think it’s possible for many people
0:01:21.079,0:01:25.869
to maintain that level of intensity without
taking some downtime from whatever you’re
0:01:25.869,0:01:32.219
pursuing. The sense of perspective and the
balance that ACE aims to give you in terms
0:01:32.219,0:01:37.639
of your life and pursuing other vocations
I think really is a huge performance enhancer
0:01:37.639,0:01:41.460
because it encourages you to see the bigger
picture.
0:01:41.460,0:01:47.280
Well this year I’m at the University of
WA studying, and hoping to get into medicine
0:01:47.280,0:01:52.130
next year, mature age, and I’m also hoping
to finish my commercial pilot training; so
0:01:52.130,0:01:57.219
to try and balance those two is quite a challenge
and I’ll be needing to be using a lot of
0:01:57.219,0:02:03.350
the skills that have come from ACE and make
sure I manage my time well, but maintaining
0:02:03.350,0:02:09.229
the balance as well so I don’t get over-burdened.
I like challenge, so I’m happy to be juggling
0:02:09.229,0:02:11.360
a few things all at once.
