The National Athlete Career and Education program recognises the important input family and friends have on the performance of athletes. An effective support structure assists an athlete to compete successfully at an elite level.

Parents and coaches working together with services such as ACE improve an athlete’s chances of being successful, and ensure that elite sport is a positive experience that assists athletes to become more successful on and off the sporting field.

Assisting your son or daughter to develop a balanced lifestyle helps them manage their busy life. One of the best ways to do this is to provide a stable home environment. Good diet, sleep, rest and recovery should all be encouraged.

It is also important to provide emotional support through the highs and lows of competition and the many days of hard training in between.

The coach’s role is focused on training, performance and competition. They know the importance of long-term planning to ensure that elite athletes can flourish and mange the ups and downs of training and competition.

Sometimes it is a good idea for all parties to come together to discuss common issues and themes, and plans for the future. Ongoing communication and a positive respectful partnership is critical.

Many elite athletes have found that commencing or continuing study or work assists in their performance, and helps to prepare them for that day when elite sport is no longer a priority. Encourage your child to speak to their ACE adviser to develop plans now and for the future.
