Australian Canoeing – sprint canoe/kayak

Canoe/kayak sprint is all about speed on flatwater over distances of 200 metres, 500 metres and 1000 metres.
Sprint canoeing involves racing in a kneeling position with a single-blade paddle.

Sprint kayaking involves racing in a seated position with a double-bladed paddle.

In sprint canoe/kayak sprint athletes race as individuals and in teams of 2 or 4.
The Australian Institute of Sport is looking for athletes aged between 15–26 who are physically fit, highly motivated, demonstrate outstanding character and have a strong desire to represent Australia at the highest level.

Athletes with an affinity for water sports, strong kinaesthetic awareness and a background in a fast-paced, dynamic or power-based sport are ideal candidates for the AIS Sports Draft for sprint canoe/kayak. Previous paddling experience is not necessary but athletes with a background in non-Olympic paddle sports (such as surf life saving, outriggers, stand-up paddleboarding and dragon boating) as well as athletes with a background in swimming are strongly encouraged to apply.
If you have the above attributes, love a challenge and are looking for a new adventure, the AIS wants to hear from you!

We are looking for athletes who are:

  • fearless
  • leaders
  • disciplined
  • dedicated
  • open-minded
  • outgoing.

Other non-specific attributes required:

  • a background in competitive sports
  • a supportive family network
  • be in a financial position able to absorb potential expenses related to the sport
  • a willingness to spend extended periods of time overseas in the long term
Athletes who meet a majority of the eligibility requirements will be considered for further state-based screening sessions.
