Meares claims triple gold at track cycling World Cup

Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) athlete Anna Meares has claimed triple gold medals in the women’s sprint, 500-metre time trial and keiren events in an incredible performance at the 2009–10 UCI Track Cycling World Cup Classics, which ran from 19 to 21 November 2009 at the Hisense Arena in Melbourne.

Australia topped the medal tally at the Melbourne World Cup event with eight gold, two silver and two bronze, which has raised Australia to first place in World Cup standings (210 points), followed by the United Kingdom (199 points) and Germany (189 points).

Meares dominated her World Cup events, beating arch rival China’s Guo Shaung two heats to nil in the sprint event. She went on to win the 500-metre time trial, recording a personal best of 33.58 seconds — the second fastest time in history — and defeating Jayco team-mate Kaarle McCulloch. Then, to cap off her superb effort, Meares beat Shaung to first place a second time, in the keirin.

In the men’s events, AIS cyclist Rohan Dennis teamed up with Cameron Meyer (ex-AIS), Luke Durbridge and Michael Hepburn to win the team pursuit, recording Australia’s fastest ever pursuit time of 3:59.59. The AIS’s Scott Sunderland and Daniel Ellis joined the Victorian Institute of Sport’s Shane Perkins to win gold for Team Jayco in the men’s team sprint event, and Sunderland also took out the 1-kilometre time trial.
