Track and Field AIS walkers finish 2, 3 and 4 at Sydney Track Classic

04 Mar 2009

Three AIS walkers dominated the top placings in the men’s 5km walk at the 2009 Sydney Track Classic.

Dual Olympic medallist Jarred Tallent placed second, clocking a personal best time of 18:41.83. Despite smashing fellow AIS athlete Nathan Deakes’ Australian Record by over 3 seconds, Tallent was unable to catch Mexico’s Eder Sanchez, who won the event in 18:40.11.

The other AIS male walkers went out chasing the record breaking pace, but felt the pinch a little as the pace took its toll in the later stages. Adam Rutter finished third in 19:27.63 and Chris Erickson walked 19:39.69 to finish fourth.

In the women’s 5km walk, Claire Tallent raced strongly to record 21:56.58, finishing second behind former AIS athlete Cheryl Webb (21:30.90).

AIS sprinter Kurt Mulcahy entered the men’s 400m as the youngest competitor in the field and having the second slowest personal best time by nearly a second. The 19-year-old started well however and entered the final straight in second place, running his fourth personal best time for the season (45.84) to finish in third.

AIS athlete Tristan Thomas also beat a world-class field to win the 400-metre hurdles.
