Australian Football - Training

Scholarship holders come together for four main program activities each year. There are three national camps, held in October, December and January. Another important component of training is an annual series of matches played against Ireland at Under 17 level. This series involves a tour to Ireland every second year and a hosting of Ireland on alternate years. A short preparation camp is held before the series.

Scholarship holders also spend a week at an AFL club as part of an induction into the AFL environment and to complement the experience of the camps and the State and national youth competition programs.

At other times the training program is supported by State League Coaches and State Talent Managers, who are in regular contact with the AIS/AFL High Performance Coach.

At the AIS camps, the players are provided with progressive testing, education and training in areas such as fitness programming, physiology, nutrition, skill acquisition and decision making development, positional and tactical play, injury prevention and rehabilitation and recovery techniques.
