Basketball AIS basketballers feature strongly in 2009 Australian Boomers squad
20 May 2009
Five AIS scholarship holders have been named in the 2009 Australian men's basketball squad.
In a non-Olympic, non-World Championship year, Basketball Australia is recruiting new talent in the Australian Boomers squad and providing its athletes with invaluable international experience.
17-year-old AIS scholarship holder Hugh Greenwood is the youngest athlete in the squad which has an average age of 23 years.
Basketball Australia CEO Larry Sengstock says the talented new recruits will get a chance to represent Australia.
'With many of our 2008 Olympians unavailable for the 2009 program due to injury or need for rest, we are taking the opportunity to give new players a chance to stake their claim for a spot in the Boomers team.
'They’re a young squad, they’re talented and they’ll get their chance to play an exciting brand of basketball under new coach Brett Brown,'
Larry Sengstock.
The Boomers squad will come together for the first time at a training camp at the AIS in Canberra on 19 June before embarking on tours of China, Argentina and Brazil in advance of the FIBA Oceania Championships against New Zealand in August.
The five AIS scholarship holders selected in the 2009 Boomers squad are: Jason Caddee, Cody Ellis, Hugh Greenwood, Igor Hadziomerovic (currently attending AIS trial camp) and Brock Motum (former AIS scholarship holder).
