Basketball Institute athletes named in under-17 Australian women’s basketball team

Eight Australian Institute of Sport athletes have been selected in the Australian women’s basketball team in preparation for the inaugural 2010 under-17 FIBA World Championships taking place in Toulouse and Rodez, France from 16–25 July.
Institute athletes named in the under-17 Australian basketball team include:

  • Sara Blicavs —Victoria 
  • Alex Bunton — Australia Capital Territory
  • Tessa Lavey — Victoria
  • Carley Mijovic — Victoria
  • Nadeen Payne — Queensland
  • Tayla Roberts — Tasmania
  • Olivia Thompson —South Australia
  • Gretel Tippett — Queensland

The team includes Gretel Tippett, who was a member of the Australian under-19 women’s team that finished fifth at the 2009 FIBA World Championships and Women’s National Basketball League Betty Watson Rookie of the Year, Tayla Roberts.

The under-17 Australian women’s team will take part in a national training camp based on the Gold Coast from 3–6 June 2010 in preparation for the World Championships.

Australia’s first World Championship matches are:

  • Australia versus Spain — 16 July in Toulouse  
  • Australia versus China — 17 July in Toulouse
  • Australia versus Argentina — 18 July in Toulouse
  • Australia versus Mali — 20 July in Toulouse
  • Australia versus Belgium — 21 July in Toulouse.

The AIS women’s basketball program was established in 1981 and is internationally regarded as one of the best athlete development programs. It works in partnership with Basketball Australia to support the training and development of talented junior athletes.
