Basketball - 30.06.08 Tutes win 2 from 2 defeating Geelong and Bendigo
Australian Sports Commission
The Tutes were able to produce a high intensity match just one night after upsetting the highly fancied Geelong Supercats by 41 points.
Arriving home Saturday afternoon and on a high from there victory the Tutes immediately prepared for the game that night against Bendigo Braves.
But the men from Bendigo made the Tutes work for it.
After the AIS raced out to a 16 point lead midway through the third quarter the Braves were able to slowly pin back the scoreboard to get within two points of their opponents.
But the Tutes stood tall and were able to steady as they held off a late surging Bendigo side to narrowly win by four points.
Coach Marty Clarke said the margin could have been bigger for the Tutes.
“In the long run we are probably a 20 point better team.
“But certainly you can’t fault the effort, you can’t fault the desire to want to play well.”
After some good wins away from Canberra the Tutes are looking promising for some finals action.
‘There is no doubt they are fielding for some big results,” Clarke said.
“They’ve been practicing really well for a couple of weeks and had a good camp two weeks before that and played really well on the road.
“With the young guys when they do get some confidence it’s hard to stop them”
The AIS came into the game missing a few key players but that didn’t stop Brock Motum’s impressive form as he scored 22 points and six boards. While Clint Steindl impressed with 14 points and five rebounds.
It was a win that the Braves were desperately seeking. They came close, they fired all they could at the AIS but unfortunately went home empty handed.
Coach Wayne Larkins said a win would have set the Braves up in a good position for the finals race.
“We had a chance for probably playing off in first or second position in our section,” Larkins said.
”Tonight was a little bit disappointing that we didn’t get off to a good start.
“But we outplayed them a bit in the second half but couldn’t get away with a win.”
Larkins said the AIS capitalised on their opportunities.
“The AIS boys really stuck to their guns, they got a couple of good plays when they needed it and made their foul shots at the end of the game,” he said.
“So they did the right thing and came away with the win and that’s what you want to be able to do in games like that.”
Dustin Bremerman almost steered his side to the unlikely victory scoring 15 fourth quarter points to finish with 25 for the night.
