Basketball - Scholarships

The AIS program is a developmental basketball program for athletes 15-19 years of age.

Basketball scholarship applicants are selected after a long process of observation and evaluation, and scholarships are normally awarded to outstanding players with the potential to represent Australia.

Talented players are identified through state intensive training centre programs (the Australian Schools Tournament, Melbourne Junior Classic, Australian Under-16 and Under-18 National Championships and the All Australian Camp). Recommendations for scholarships can be received from club, state and intensive training centre program coaches.

Requirements for scholarship holders

  • The athlete must demonstrate outstanding potential to represent Australia in basketball.
  • The athlete must demonstrate a desire to succeed not only in basketball but also in their personal life, education and in a career that suits their interests and abilities.
  • The athlete must demonstrate the potential to adapt to a new environment, to be socially compatible within a group and to be highly receptive to coaching.
  • The athlete must be prepared to accept and carry out the AIS Code of Ethics and the standards and requirements of the Basketball program.

The athlete's potential to meet these requirements is assessed at an interview with the athlete, observation of the athlete at camps and championships, discussion with the athlete's parents and coaches, and the previously outlined process of consultation.

An Orientation Program is held the week before the start of classes and training and is an essential part of the transition to AlS life.

The program is designed to introduce athletes to both the AIS, Canberra and the basketball program. it includes a mixture of information sessions, social activities and basketball preparation including:

  • meeting basketball coaches and support staff
  • learning what is expected in the program
  • introducing AIS facilities and services
