Beach Volleyball Palmer and Jensen knocked out in Osaka
22 May 2009
The Australian pair of Becchara Palmer and Heike Jensen have been knocked out by Belgium's Van Breedam and Mouha in round three of the Osaka Beach Volleyball Open.
After losing their opening main draw match 1-2 to Germany’s Banck and Gunther, the pair were relegated to the ‘loser’s bracket’ of the draw, in which a single-loss knockout rule applies.
Palmer and Jensen recovered from the tight three set loss to the Germans to open strongly against Schwaiger and Schwaiger of Austria, taking out the first set 21-19. Austria’s Beijing Olympic quarterfinalists hit back hard, winning the second comfortably, 21-12.
The Aussies were down but not out. The pair dug deep to keep their tournament alive, producing a 15-13 win in the third set to seal the match and advance to the third round.
However, the duo were outclassed in their next match, bowing out of the tournament with a straight sets loss (21-12, 21-15) to Van Breedam and Mouha.
The next tournament on the international women’s scene is the Seoul Open in Korea from May 26-31.
