29 Jul 2009
The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) today announced the appointment of Steve Tutton as head coach of the AIS/national beach volleyball program.
Tutton previously held the position of AIS head coach for beach volleyball (1997–2007) before becoming program manager for high performance Olympic and Commonwealth Games sports at the South Australian Sports Institute.
Tutton said he was looking forward to once again working with Australia’s best beach volleyballers and achieving international success for Australia.
‘Australia has a proud and successful Olympic history in beach volleyball and it’s important we continue to look forward and build on that fine record,’ Tutton said.
‘The AIS is regarded throughout the world as being at the forefront of elite athlete development and the Institute’s beach volleyball program is testament to that reputation.’
Director of the AIS, Professor Peter Fricker, said the re-appointment of Tutton was a major boost to the Institute’s world-class beach volleyball program.
‘Steve is a quality coach who brings international experience at the elite level and a professional approach to our beach volleyball program,’ Professor Fricker said.
‘He has an intimate knowledge of Australia’s elite pathways and is well placed to guide Australia’s talented beach volleyballers in their quest for excellence.’
Tutton represented Australia in beach volleyball at the 1996, 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games.
