Bodo Andreass

AIS Head Coach Bodo Andreass is also the National Head Coach. Bodo has been the AIS and National Coach since 1997. He was the Head Coach for the Australian boxing team at the 1998 Commonwealth Games, 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games, 2004 Athens Olympic Games, and 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games.

Bodo's boxing career spanned seventeen years from 1964 to 1981. He was an East German national team member from 1974 to 1981 and national champion in 1979.

He began his coaching career in 1983 and was a national team coach in East Germany from 1986 to 1990. He subsequently took up appointments as the national coach of Nigeria from 1991 to 1994, and South Africa from 1995 to 1997, before being appointed Australian national coach. Bodo Andreass was an Olympic coach in 1996, 2000 and 2004, and also coached in the 1991, 1993, 1995, 1997 2005 and 2007 world championships.

Bodo has coached boxers to win medals at the highest level of competition, including:

  • a bronze medal, 1989 world championships, Moscow
  • a bronze medal, 1991 world championships, Sydney
  • two silver medals, 1992 Olympic Games, Barcelona
  • a silver medal, 1993 world championships, Tampere, Finland
  • one gold and two silver medals, 1994 Commonwealth Games, Victoria, Canada
  • four bronze medals, 1998 Commonwealth Games, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
  • three gold medals at 2002 Commonwealth Games, Manchester, England
  • two gold medals and four bronze medals at the 2006 Commonwealth Games, Melbourne, Australia

Erle Wiltshire - Assistant Coach

Erle Wiltshire AIS Boxing Assistant CoachErle Wiltshire joined the AIS Boxing Program in January 2007, becoming the first full-time assistant coach.

As an athlete Erle represented Australia at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia.  Erle is a 5 time National Champion and 5 time Oceania Champion. He was also an AIS scholarship holder for several years.

Following retirement as an athlete Erle began coaching in Perth where he was until he took up his post at the AIS. 

Don Abnett - Coach - NTID Program

Don Abnett is the inagural coach of the AIS National Talent Identification and Development (NTID) Boxing Program.

Don has held a boxing coaching accreditation since 1982.  In 1985 he attended the first Level 2 Coaching Course in Australia and was the youngest participant.

Don has held State Head Coach positions in NSW (1994-1995) and the ACT (2003-2007). Internationally Don has travelled to the Junior World Championships as Head Coach in 2004 and 2006, where Australia won a Bronze Medal, and was appointed Head Coach for the 2005 Oceania Championships and Assistant Coach for the 1995 and 2003 Oceania Championships.

As an athlete Don represented New Zealand in 1978 at an international Invitational Tournament.
