17 May 2010
Australian Institute of Sport athlete Jessica Fox has won the women’s K1 event at the national selections trials in qualification for the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games at Penrith Whitewater Stadium on 8 May.
The 15-year-old Fox performed strongly in perfect conditions, recording a time of 115.49 seconds, finishing ahead of Kirsty Higgisson in second place.
Fox claimed a double title winning the women’s slalom event in 86.83, followed by Anne-Sophie Sullivan in second place (103.49).
The new format of competition adopted for the Games featured a head-to-head sprint through a figure-of-eight and a slalom obstacle course.
It was a great result for Fox, who has only recently made the transition from canoe slalom to take up sprint kayaking.
Fox has enjoyed great success in the slalom discipline, winning gold at the 2009 Australian Youth Olympic Games as well as claiming the senior C1 slalom event at the 2010 Oceania championship.
She also has her sights set on competing at the Junior Slalom World Championships taking place in Foix, France from July 9 to 11.
