Canoeing - Sprint Training

Athlete training takes place primarily under the guidance of the athlete's individual state institute of sport or state academy of sport program, except for the camps that are held throughout the year for the team boats.

A weekly program might consist of four sessions in the gymnasium starting at 6.00am. These sessions are followed by either a run, swim or bike ride. Paddling drills occur in the afternoon, together with long-distance work and heart-monitoring sessions. During the endurance phase, athletes will paddle approximately 200 kilometres per week.

Each year the national squad travels to Europe on a pre-world championships tour to compete in World Cup events in Europe and to train at European facilities. The selected national team also competes in the world championships.

Training programs for juniors or beginners would be very different to this program. Ask your coach for a program suitable for your level.
