Women's cricket is a sport that requires players to be athletic, physically fit and demonstrate good technique and hand-eye coordination. However, female cricket players also require a number of other factors in order to reach elite levels. Among these are access to facilities, coaching, travel funding and ground allocation. Top players also need a stronger competition to provide better preparation for international cricket. The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) program offers scholarship holders all of this and more.
About AIS Women's Cricket
The AIS Women's Cricket program commenced as a full-scholarship program in 2001. It is a camps-based program where the squad has state-based camps as well as two national camps held in Canberra and Brisbane during the year. The AIS squad consists of up to 20 scholarship holders. In addition to this there are five World Cup-targeted AIS scholarship holders. These players are selected from the national league and international series from the previous season. The AIS squad is also the national squad.
