Diving Training

AIS Diving scholarship athletes undertake an intensive weekly training program. Athletes train six days a week (twice a day, except for Wednesdays and Saturdays) for up to 32 hours per week at the Sleeman Centre in Brisbane.

The morning session is generally used for a combination of:

  • water harness training - athletes practise new and/or difficult dives from the one-metre and three-metre springboards with the aid of a safety training harness
  • dry land training - which takes place in the purpose-built AIS Diving Dry Land Training Centre. Athletes practise fundamental diving skills making use of equipment such as the safety harness, twisting belt, trampoline, foam pit, foam mats and indoor diving boards. Dry land training also includes stretching, plyometrics, abdominal exercises, pilates and sprint running drills.
  • strength & conditioning - each scholarship athlete completes a general and diving specific weights program under the supervision of a qualified strength and conditioning consultant.

The afternoon session is generally used for water-based training in the dive pool. The training session consists of a high repetition of training drills including entries and build-ups, and competition dives (springboard and/or platform).

Training programs for juniors or beginners would be very different to this program. Ask your coach for a program suitable for your level.

The major focus of the training program is the Olympic Games and other major international diving competitions including the FINA World Championships, FINA Diving World Cup and Commonwealth Games. In addition, athletes generally compete at the FINA Diving World Series and at a number of FINA Diving Grand Prix events in preparation for major international competitions.
