Gymnastics - Scholarships

The AIS men's program has a maximum of 12 scholarships and the women's program 24 scholarships. There are two types of gymnastics scholarships awarded: residential and non-residential. They are awarded for a specified period with one school term generally being the minimum period. The AIS Gymnastic Scholarship program is presently being restructured. Further information will be available shortly.

The family environment best supports the very young gymnasts under 12 years of age, and it is preferred and encouraged that these sub-junior gymnasts live with their family. Older gymnasts can live in the AIS Residence where they receive the best possible care and support. Under-age athletes have access to a purpose-built junior residence.

It is important to understand that no coach or program owns a gymnast, they are all part of the overall long-term development of that individual. The choice is always that of the gymnast to accept the challenge and take up the offer of a scholarship. The Gymnastics program requires commitment, discipline, perseverance and, above all, an honest attitude to achieve the goals set out by the program.

More information on Scholarships at the Australian Institute of Sport is also available.

  • Athlete Career and Education (ACE) assist all scholarship holders with education and allowances during their term

  • Full Medical facilities are provided to the scholarship holders through the Sports Medicine Facility at the AIS. All gymnasts must be covered by full private medical insurance that will cover most of the gap between the scheduled fee and the fee charged.

  • Athletes are also serviced by the Sport Science facility with Vicki De Prazer the Sport Psychologist now working with the gymnastics program and an AIS Nutritionist available for consultation.

  • In the AIS Residence , the athletes are supervised and supported by live-in house parents.  While in residence, there are guidelines for the athletes, depending on training, education and age, that outline expectations on the scholarship holder's behaviour and conduct.
