Training

Pre-season training at the elite level will usually include weight training, general conditioning techniques and specific drills for improving skills, as well as set plays, individual sessions and recovery sessions.

AIS athletes usually train three times a week, with additional weight sessions twice a week. Training sessions include aerobic running, sprint work, and skill and set plays. Athletes also attend designated training with clubs to which they are drafted. Club games are held on the weekend.

A sample weekly training program might be:

  • Monday morning - weights and psychology session
  • Tuesday morning - individual sessions/corners specialist session
  • Tuesday afternoon - team training
  • Wednesday morning - individual sessions/corners specialist session
  • Thursday morning - weights
  • Thursday afternoon - team training
  • Friday morning - team training
  • Saturday/Sunday - club fixtures.

Training programs for juniors or beginners would be very different to this program. Ask your coach for a program suitable for your level.
