Netball AIS 51 d Victorian Fury 46

22 Aug 2012
The Victorian Fury have suffered their first loss to the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), going down 46-51 in their opening match of the Australian Netball League (VNL)in Melbourne.
The Victorian Fury had an unsettled start while the AIS came out of the blocks firing forging a significant lead early on and a momentum that carried them through four quarters.
Fury defenders Micaela Wilson and Kara Richards struggled to counter the height and accuracy of AIS goaler Kristina Brice who was supported by a speedy mid court who moved the ball down the court with ease.
Strong defensive pressure from the AIS coupled with Fury handling errors, allowed the AIS to maintain control.
Fury goalers Kath Knott and Howard were up against fierce AIS defence duo of Courtney Bruce and Victorian Joanna Weston.
The home side found their rhythm in the latter half of the game, with quicker ball movement down court, improved defence in the goal circle and an increased determination for the ball. Their efforts were rewarded, closing the gap to two or three goals however, both the defensive and scoreboard pressure from the AIS allowed them to strengthen their lead to win the match 46-51.
After five prior meetings, this is the first time the AIS have defeated the Fury.
