AIS Scholarship Program Objectives
“To play a key role within the National network of Institutes in maximizing medal winning performances in Olympic category boats at the London Olympic Games and World Championships.”
AIS Program Strategy 2009–2012
The AIS Residential program is Canberra-based, comprising full time rowing scholarships and a program of national training camps
Years one and two of the Olympic quadrennial primarily focus on the structured development of emerging talented athletes capable of being in the London 2012 team. In these years, Senior A athletes will primarily be based in the states.
Years three and four primarily focus on maximizing performances in key Olympic category big boats. In these years, development categories will primarily be based in the states.
The National and AIS Head Coaches (and HP Coaches) will coach international crews in line with the objective of maximizing our medal winning performances in London which may include either the Senior A or Under 23 Teams.
2009/10 AIS Scholarship Program
The Women’s Program will be managed by the National and AIS Women’s Head Coach, Lyall McCarthy, and the Men’s Program by the National and AIS Men’s Head Coach, Noel Donaldson.
The scholarship program in 2009/10 will be further supported by a Men’s and Women’s High Performance Coach and a Scholarship Coach. The recruitment of these personnel is underway. Candidates are likely to be of senior international medal winning ability.
The 2009/10 Scholarship Program sees Adaptive Rowing scholoarships introduced to the AIS. Up to four scholarships will be offered to targeted fixed seat athletes (arms only and trunk and arms athletes) who are deemed to have the ability to be members of the 2012 London Paralympic Team and ultimately achieve gold medal success.
To be selected each athlete must be a fit and proper person to participate in the AIS scholarship program and to represent the AIS. Each athlete must also display a suitable temperament and suitable levels of self-motivation and self-discipline to participate in the AIS Scholarship Program.
