Rugby League - Scholarships

Athletes are offered AIS scholarships on the basis of their performances in schoolboy and club rugby league representative matches. Scholarship holders must be of Year 11 or 12 school age and either be at school or involved in some other type of formal education, for example, TAFE or an apprenticeship. They must be available to attend camps, which generally run for five or six days. Because players living in Sydney, Brisbane, Illawarra, Newcastle or Canberra have access to the very successful development pathway of the National Rugby League club junior representative programs, scholarships are only offered to players who live outside these areas.

Scholarships are initially offered for a one-year period. Players who are on scholarship in Year 11 are eligible for a second year of scholarship providing their development and performances warrant re-selection.

The program is provided cost free to those who are granted scholarships. Scholarships include travel, accommodation and meals associated with camps, access to Athlete Career and Education services, and sports science and sports medicine support, as well as a program uniform. The scholarship may also offer some assistance with training expenses in certain situations.
