Training

Rugby League training shot Photo: ASC collection NSICThe AIS Rugby League program is camps based. That is, players live at home and come to five camps per year, usually at the AIS in Canberra. However, at least one camp is held every two years in Queensland where a match is played against the Queensland Academy of Sport. At the camps, players, in addition to skill development, receive lectures and practical experiences in nutrition, sports psychology, weight training, physiology and training methods. Through the Athlete Career and Education program at the AIS, they also receive educational experiences in areas such as public speaking, media skills, study skills and time management.

At some of these camps, scholarship holders will play a match against suitable opposition so that coaches can assess their ability to learn and make use of the skills that they are taught. On occasions, they will play against international teams,. In 2003 the squad toured England. where they played against a Great Britain under-17 team. Between camps, players are provided with fitness, weight training and individual prehabilitation programs that they are expected to follow and report on.
