History of the AIS Rugby Union Program - Achievements
2006
- The AIS/Australia U19 team became the first Australian age group team to win an iRB world championship in it's six year history beating Oceanic rivals New Zealand in the final in Dubai.
1997
- The Southern Hemisphere championships were held in Sydney with the AIS Australian U21's remaining undefeated to win the tournament. The team also defeated the England U2l's to complete the year undefeated. Players to advance to the national level are Stirling Mortlock and Jason Jones-Hughes. Whilst 9 other players have advanced to Super 12 Rugby. Back to back championships have never been achieved and this coincided with the coaches Ian Kennedy and Geoff Richards becoming the AIS Head Coach and the AIS Senior Coach respectively. 18 AIS Scholarship holders made this side.
1996
- The Southern Hemisphere Championships were held in New Zealand with the AIS Australian U21's remaining undefeated to win the tournament. Players to advance to the National Level are Elton Flatley whilst 8 other players have advance to Super 12 Rugby. The New Zealand team fielded 3 players already selected for the All Blacks thus making the achievement a win against all olds. 17 AIS Scholarship holders made the side.
1990/91
- The under 21 team against New Zealand recorded a win, a loss and a draw on it's three match tour in July. The National senior Team produced the major success of the program in 1991 when it won the World Cup Trophy in England. Four former and current scholarship holders were in the team and AIS coaches were involved with the team in the lead up to the during the World Cup matches.
1989/90
- Of the 40 full scholarship holders, 35 represented their states at under 21 level while 18 went on to represent the Australian Under 21 team against New Zealand. Of a total of 66 full and part time scholarships awarded in this year, 24 were selected for their senior state teams, while 6 played for the national senior team.
- The Australian Rugby Football Union appointed both coaches from the AIS as technical and tactical advisers to the coach of the Australian team during it's home series against France and the tour of New Zealand.
1988/89
- The first team consisted of 42 players. Of these, seven were eventually selected for the full Australian Team, seventeen for the under 21 Australian Team, and almost all to play for their State under 21 teams.
