Head coach, Byron Davis

Portrait of Byron Davis - Photo : NSIC Collection ASCByron was the High Performance Squash Coach for South Australia before accepting a position at the AIS in October 2003.

Byron coached the 2003 Australian Men’s Team to win the World Championships in Vienna, Austria and was also coach of the Australian Men’s Team that finished 5 th in Pakistan in the World Teams Championships in 2005. He also partnered with former AIS Head Coach Geoff Hunt to coach the 2006 Commonwealth Games Team which achieved a record medal haul for Australia. The team won 3 Gold, 3 Silver and 2 Bronze medals. In recognition of his coaching achievements in 2006, Byron received the Squash Australia Coach of the Year award.

Byron is a former AIS Squash Scholarship holder who’s highest PSA World Ranking was 14 in 1998. Byron won a silver medal for Australia in doubles at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur and was a World Doubles Champion in Chennai, India in 2004.

High Performance Coach, Rodney Martin

Portrait of Rodney Martin - Photo : NSIC Collection ASCRodney has been a coach at the program for over 8 years and has made a significant contribution to the development of this world leading squash program. He is currently based in New York for up to 7 months of the year, where he is developing an American base for AIS athletes to further develop their skills.

Rodney coached the 2001 Australian Men’s Team to win the World Team Championships in Melbourne.

Rodney was a scholarship holder at the AIS Squash Unit from 1985 until 1989. The highlight of Rodney’s playing career was no doubt his win at the 1991 World Championships where he defeated Jahangir Khan. Rodney was also a member of the 1987, 1989 and 1993 Australian World Champion Teams. Rodney was inducted into the Australian Squash Hall of Fame in 2007.

Consultant Coach, Michelle Martin

Michelle MartinRetired squash champion and former Australian Institute of Sport scholarship holder Michelle Martin returned to the AIS in 2007, this time to offer her expertise as an assistant coach.

Michelle, named among the 25 ‘Best of the Best’ Australian Institute of Sport graduates, is a former world number one and dual Commonwealth Games gold medallist. Her sporting achievements also include winning three World Open titles and six British Open titles. Michelle is a member of the Australian Squash Hall of Fame.

Michelle coached the 2004 Australian Women’s Team to win the World team championship in Amsterdam and was also coach and manager of the young 2006 Australian Women’s Team, competing in Canada.
