Shock as Grinham dumped from US Open

Alison Waters has pulled off a major shock by defeating second seeded Australian Rachael Grinham (Former AIS Schaolarship) in the semi-finals of the US Open women’s squash tournament in New York.

Waters won a tight first game before racing away with the next two to win the match 11-9, 11-1, 11-2.

There was an even bigger shock to follow when Waters’ fellow Englishwoman Jenny Duncalf ousted world number one Nicol David from the tournament 11-6, 11-4, 11-3 to set up an all-English final for the first time since 1993.

Grinham, the world number four and four-time British Open champion from Toowoomba, built up an early lead but once Waters found her rhythm there was no stopping her.

The English underdog played a solid match and made very few errors.

“I started off OK and then Ali settled into it -- I wasn’t covering the court the way I needed to,” Grinham said.

“She played really well and is improving all the time.”

Semi-final results (prefix denotes seeding):

4-Jenny Duncalf (ENG) bt 1-Nicol David (MAS) 11-6, 11-4, 11-3

3-Alison Waters (ENG) bt 2-Rachael Grinham (AUS) 11-9, 11-1, 11-2
