Swimming Achievements
Achievements and highlights
The AIS Swimming program has made an important contribution to Australia’s international results. Scholarship holders have included Michael Klim, Petria Thomas, Todd Pearson, Bill Kirby, Daniel Kowalski, Matthew Dunn, Nicole Stevenson, Linley Frame, Justin Norris and Lisa Curry–Kenny. The program continues to develop quality athletes who achieve significant results at major international events.
2008
For the first time in Olympic history, the Australian Team won a medal in all six relay events. Further, the Women’s 4x100m Medley relay became the first Australian relay team to successfully defend their Olympic title. AIS athletes were members of all six relay teams.
- 11 of 14 AIS swimmers won medals 78% (4/10 in Athens 40%).
- 7 medals won by AIS swimmers (5 in Athens)
- 14 medals won by AIS swimmers counting individual relay positions (7 in Athens).
- 6 of 12 AIS individual performances made finals 50% (3/12 in Athens 25%).

The following athletes were selected on the Australian Team to compete at the 2003 World Championships in Moscow - Fran Adcock, Linda MacKenzie, Sarah Paton, Heidi Crawford, Antony Matkovich, Adam Pine, Regan Harrison, Justin Norris, Trent Steed, Craig Stevens.
Results from the championships were: Craig Stevens - Gold 4x200 Freestyle Relay; Linda MacKenzie - Silver 4x200 Freestyle Relay.
Jade Edmistone and Joshua Taylor attended the World University Games in Korea. Jade won a silver medal in the 50m Breaststroke, Jade's heat time of 33.68 was the 3rd fastest Australian performance.

Athletes that the AIS Swimming program has helped develop include:
Nicole Stevenson
- won a bronze medal in the 200m backstroke event at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games
- set a world short course record in the 200m backstroke in Melbourne in 1992
- is the only Australian swimmer to have competed in six successive Pan Pacific Championships.
Linley Frame — won gold and silver medals in the 100m and 200m breaststroke, respectively, and a silver medal in the 4 x 100m medley relay, at the 1991 world championships in Perth.
Lisa Curry-Kenny — won three gold medals at the 1982 Commonwealth Games.
Rob Woodhouse — won a bronze medal in the 200m individual medley at the 1984 Seoul Olympics.
Susie Woodhouse — won gold medals in the 100m and 200m butterfly at the 1983 World Student Games.
Michele Pearson — won a bronze medal in the 200m individual medley in the 1984 Olympic Games.
Mark Stockwell — won a silver medal in the 100m freestyle and the 4 x 100m freestyle relay at the 1984 Olympic Games.
Martin ‘Marty’ Roberts
- considered an all-rounder, at the 1990 Commonwealth Games he won gold medals in the 200m freestyle and 4 x 200m freestyle relay, a silver medal in the 200m butterfly and a bronze medal in the 200m individual medley
- won two gold medals at the 1993 World University Games.
Matthew Dunn
- won gold medals in the 200m and 400m individual medley at the 1993 Pan Pacific Championships
- was named male swimmer of the meet after winning both the 200m and 400m individual medley as well as a gold and a silver medal in relays, at the 1995 World Short Course Championships; in the process he broke two Commonwealth records
- won three more medals at the 1995 Pan Pacific Championships
- finalist in both the 200m and 400m individual medley at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics
- won gold medals 200m individual medley, 4 x 200m freestyle at the 1998 Commonwealth Games
- won gold in the 200m individual medley and the 400m individual medley at the 1997 and 1999 World Short Course Championships
- won a gold medal in the 400m individual medley at the 1999 Pan Pacific Championships
Scott Miller
- won a gold medal in the 100m butterfly and was a member of the gold medal 4 x 100m medley relay team at the 1994 Commonwealth Games
- won gold medals in the 100m and 200m butterfly at the 1995 Pan Pacific Championships.
- won a silver medal in the 100m butterfly at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and was a member of the bronze-medal winning 4 x 100m medley relay team
Petria Thomas
- gold medallist in the 100m butterfly at the 1994 Commonwealth Games
- silver medallist in the 200m butterfly at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics
- won gold in the 100m (twice) and 200m butterfly, silver in the 50m and 200m butterfly on the World Cup tour in 1996
