Swimming Twelve AIS swimmers named in world championship squad
23 Mar 2009
Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) swimmers competed fiercely at the 2009 Telstra Australian Swimming Championships which ran 17–22 March.
Swimmers from the AIS won nine gold medals and 12 scholarship holders gained selection to compete in the Australian team at this year’s FINA World Swimming Championships in Rome.
Ashley Delaney was a big winner, collecting three gold medals and setting an Australian record in the men’s 50-metre backstroke final and an Australian and Commonwealth record in the men’s 200-metre backstroke final.
20-year-old Robert Hurley claimed his first national crown at the open level, winning the men’s 400-metre freestyle final in a personal best time of 3:46.64.
In the men’s 200-metre freestyle final, five of the top six finishers were AIS athletes. Patrick Murphy won gold with a time of 1:46.85 and Tommaso D’Orsogna swam a personal best time to claim bronze.
The AIS’s Brenton Rickard and fellow Queenslander Christian Sprenger (Commercial Swimming Club) competed in an entertaining dual across all three breaststroke events. The pair could not be separated in the men’s 100-metre final, both swimming 1:00.64 to finish equal first. Rickard hit the wall first in the 50-metre final but Sprenger produced a momentous finish in the 200-metre final to beat Rickard by a mere 0.06 of a second.
The AIS women also showed their strength at the trials. Belinda Hocking produced two gold medal performances to win the women’s 100-metre and 200-metre backstroke finals and team mate Sally Foster swam strongly to take out the women’s 200-metre breaststroke final in a time of 2:25.88.
