Tennis - Scholarships
The program takes applications for scholarships each year in December, for the following years intake.
In order to be eligible for a full scholarship athletes must meet the following criteria:
• must be 23 or under (as at 1 January of intake year) and fulfil two of the three playing criteria.
Playing Criteria:
• Currently ranked inside the top 250 singles rankings on the ATP or WTA Tour
• Winner of a Grand Slam Junior title within the past 24 months
• Winner of an ATP Challenger or ITF Women’s $25,000 (or above) event within the past 12 months
Partial and full scholarships via wildcard will also be offered at the discretion of the AIS selection team. Based on the above criteria the AIS head coach recommends players for scholarships, Tennis Australia then endorses athletes selected for scholarships.
All athletes are expected to study or work as well as to train and compete in their sport. The AIS provides athletes with coaching, access to facilities and equipment, sports medicine and sport science, travel, advice on personal and career development, some education expenses, and accommodation.
All athletes have supervised on-court training sessions including regular one-to-one coaching on technique, tactics and motivation. These sessions are supplemented with match play. The program also uses video analysis. Athletes have a strength and conditioning program, which includes weight training, running, agility work, cross-training and recovery. Besides tennis and physical training, also included in a players weekly program is sport psychology, massage, injury rehabilitation and nutrition education.
