AIS Volleyball scholarships vary from three months to one year. Prospective athletes can apply directly to the Volleyball Administrator.

Successful applicants are chosen by the Head Coaches of the Volleyball program in consultation with Volleyball Australia. Selection is based on the level of excellence and the development potential of each applicant.

The AIS scholarships are linked to the national senior teams for Men. AIS Volleyball staff use several major domestic events each year to scout potential scholarship athletes, including

  • The National Junior Championships are held every year in July by a state association and are rotated to a different state each year.
  • The National Schools Cup event is held in December each year in Melbourne.
  • The Australian Volleyball League (AVL) is a league of the best club teams within Australia and competes from September through December every year.

Training

Athletes spend approximately 30 hours a week training. They participate in two three-hour training/weights sessions a day, six days a week, at the purpose-built multi-sports hall. The major focus of the program, however, is competition, and coaches aim to have the teams play 50 international matches each year.

The national junior and university teams are integral parts of the national Volleyball Team Australia program. The athletes in these teams regularly train as visiting athletes at the AIS Volleyball program in special high-level camps.

Training programs for juniors or beginners would be very different to this program. Ask your coach for a program suitable for your level.
