Gregory McFadden (Head Coach)

In 2005 Greg took up the position as Australian/AIS Women’s Head Coach. In his first year as Head Coach the women’s team won a bronze medal in the 2005 World League Finals as well as a credible 6th placing at the Montreal World Championships.

2006 proved to be an exceptional year with gold at the World Cup in China where they defeated Olympic champions Italy in the final. Earlier in the same year the Australian team also won gold at the Commonwealth Championships and a 4th placing at the World League Finals.

In 2007 the team also posted great success narrowly losing to USA in the final of the World Championships to claim silver in front of a home crowd.

Then in 2008 the team backed up to hit the podium again at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games to claim bronze in a thriller against Hungary.

In 2009 after 9 girls retired from the Beijing team, Greg started rebuilding the new squad and took them to the World League with a bronze medal and World Championships in Rome (6th).

2010 saw the new team improve dramatically and went through the season only losing 1 game in regulation time (3 in penalty shootouts) to win the Silver medal in both the World league and World Cup being defeated by the World Champion USA team both times.

Greg started his coaching career as the Scholarship Coach to the AIS Senior Men's Program in 1990, progressing to Assistant Coach in 1992 through to 1996. He then moved on to the NSWIS Head Coach in 1997 to 2001 before returning to the AIS as the Head Coach for the Men’s Program.

Greg has coached Australian teams at the World University games in 1991,93,95,97,99 winning bronze medals in 1995 & 97; Australian Youth (U/17's) European tour in 1998/99 and 2002/03; and also coached the Australian Junior (U/20's) Men's at the World Championships in Istanbul 2001.

Greg was appointed as Assistant Women’s Coach for the Athens 2004 Olympics.

As a player Greg was a member of the Australian Senior Squad from 1986 to 1996 representing at the Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games (5th), 1993 Fina World Cup in Athens (3rd), and 1994 World Championships in Rome. The 1993 Fina World Cup is the only time the Senior Men’s team has won a medal in a major competition in the history of Australian Water Polo.

Greg finished playing competitively in the National Water Polo League in 2002. He played for the Cronulla Sharks and played over 200 games in the League winning five National League titles. He was the first player in the league to achieve this feat.
