The Australian women’s water polo team has scored a big win over the United States 10–8 at the Six-Nation International Women’s tournament at the Sydney Olympic Aquatic Centre in Sydney on 12 August.
Australia’s victory was a fitting end to the tournament, which marked the 10th anniversary of the Stingers gold medal victory against the United States at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.
Australia staged a strong comeback, after trailing the United States 6–4 at half time, scoring four goals in the third quarter to equal the score 8–8.
The host nation gained the upper hand in the final quarter with Melissa Rippon and Zoe Arancini scoring a goal each to seal a tremendous win.
Australian coach Greg McFadden praised the Stingers for their determination in winning the final.
‘Our movement was fantastic but this game is all about ticker. You need to have ticker to win games like this and I think we had plenty of that,’ McFadden said.
The Australian Stingers are in great form as they set their sights on preparing for 2010 FINA World Cup, which they last won in 2006, taking place in Christchurch, New Zealand from 17 to 22 August.
Australia’s first World Cup matches will be against the United States, Russia and New Zealand in pool A.
