Water Polo Training

In this section

A normal training week for the AIS Women's Water Polo team consists of:

  • three to four gym sessions
  • three to four swimming sessions
  • four to five water polo-specific sessions.

Most state institutes of sport or academies of sport athletes train six mornings and five afternoons a week. The head coaches for each of the institutes and academies meet regularly to ensure a common level of training is being followed across the states.

All AIS scholarship holders are members of the Australian women's junior and/or senior squads and train together on a monthly basis, dependent on international and national competitions.

The Australian women's senior team has one major competition each year, which is either the Olympic Games, the FINA World Championships or a FINA World Cup. In addition, the national team also competes in at least one other international tournament each year, and the AIS squad hosts one international team for a joint training camp.
