Given the wide use of skinfold calipers, it is somewhat surprising that relatively little attention has been given to their calibration. For those interested in high quality skinfold measurement with Harpenden Calipers, the National Sport Science Quality Assurance Program can now offer a first principles calibration service to anyone around the world. We have spent five years studying the factors that affect the accuracy of measurement with this caliper, with our findings having been published in journals, conferences and book chapters. As an example for highlighting the importance and relevance of skinfold caliper calibration, a 1 g.mm -2 decrease in jaw closing pressure will increase a sum of skinfolds by ~10%.
The base cost of calibration is ~ A$270 plus freight. Extra charges apply to various calibration services. Complete calibration of Harpenden Calipers includes servicing of the pivot and dial gauge, and assessment of the spring co-efficient and jaw gap. A written report is also provided.
