AIS Sports Science Sports Medicine
The forefront of elite training and competition facilities
The Sports Science Sports Medicine building houses many of the AIS’s most innovative and fascinating facilities. Physiology, biochemistry, biomechanics, psychology, nutrition, medicine, physical therapies (physiotherapy and massage), performance analysis and skill acquisition are all housed in this building.
Before the opening of the Sports Science and Medicine Building on 22 July 1985 by the Hon John Brown MP, Minister for Sport, Recreation and Tourism, there were very limited facilities for testing and medical treatment of AIS athletes.
The most notable feature of this building from the outside is the barrel-vaulting which covers the two-storey biomechanics laboratory dome. This allows sprinters, hurdlers, jumpers, and throwers to run into or out of the building whilst being filmed and tested. Over the years a large number of sports have been tested in this world-class laboratory including cricket, parachuting, track and field, volleyball and golf.
