FAQs
Q. Does the tour involve much walking?
A. The tour lasts for 90 minutes and up to an hour of that time can be spent walking at a gentle pace from building to building. These distances are never more than 100 metres and your tour guide will vary the pace to suit the needs of the group. The paths have low gradients and options to stairs are available in all buildings.
Q. What times do tours run?
A. Public tours depart from the Sports Visitor Centre daily (except some public holidays) at 10.00am, 11.30am, 1.00pm and 2.30pm. Tours for group bookings begin at 8.30am and are available throughout the day, with night tours available upon request.
Q. Do I need to book?
A. Bookings are not required for public tours but are essential for group bookings.
Q. I use a wheelchair, can I still join the tour?
A. Yes – all AIS facilities are wheelchair accessible. Toilets are located within the Sports Visitor Centre and parking for people with disability is also available in the Australian Sports Commission Administration Building car park adjacent to the Sports Visitor Centre.
Q. We have young children, is the tour suitable for us?
A. Whilst the interactive exhibit Sportex is of greatest interest to children we ensure that the whole tour is accessible by stroller when the younger ones tire. A baby change table is available in the Sports Visitor Centre. Around 100,000 primary school children take this tour every year.
Q. Can we purchase food or drinks?
A. The café at the AIS sells a wide range of hot and cold food and drink for you to enjoy before or after your tour. The café can be found in the Sports Visitor Centre.
Q. What else is there to see and do?
A. Depending on the time of day we suggest you fill in time before or after your tour viewing the exhibits located within the Sports Visitor Centre or browsing for souvenirs in the AIS Shop. You may also choose to wander up to the AIS Track and Field facility where the AIS Track and Field team trains or perhaps visit Canberra Stadium, home ground of the ACT Brumbies and Canberra Raiders. We also have a swimming pool and fitness centre that is also available to the general public (See Swim and Fitness at the AIS).
