Indigenous women in the Olympics

C. Currie

With a global population of 300 million Indigenous Peoples the success of Indigenous women within the Olympic movement is one of the main areas for celebration of the last 100 years of the Olympiad. In the last Century we have celebrated the success of Indigenous athletes Thorpe, Tewanama, Mills, Morris and other male persons, but it has only been in the last two decades that Indigenous women have taken their place on the world stage of the Olympic Games.

Indigenous women are not a Minority, but yet, are a minority within the global sport family. They have overcome great challenges such as segregation, seclusion, economic and social oppression, racism and discrimination and they have achieved one of the highest success rates of a Peoples within the Olympics. These obstacles, perhaps, have been the stepping stones to their success.

Sports are Human Rights. Sports, to Indigenous Peoples. Is a holistic concept of developing the entire human being in spiritual, mental, physical and emotional areas. By virtue of Indigenous Women's participation within the Olympic Games, we promote and enhance sports as Human Rights and as a Holistic concept of human development.

Earlier this year I shared during the 2nd IOC Conference on Women and Sport in Paris, France, the Olympic successes of Indigenous Women from around the world and called upon the IOC to celebrate the accomplishments of the Indigenous Peoples within the Olympic Movement by featuring them within all aspects of the Olympics. Together we are "Celebrating Humanity" by celebrating "Indigenous Peoples within the Olympic Movement".

WIN Sports, Incorporated is an International Sport Organisation recognised and supported by His Excellency Juan Antonio Samaranch, President, International Olympic Committee and the Indigenous Peoples of the World.
