RIC CHARLESWORTH TO HEAD AIS COACH-MENTORING PROGRAM

20 March 2002

Australian Sports Commission CEO Mark Peters announced today that one of the world's most successful and respected coaches, Ric Charlesworth, would return to the AIS in a mentoring role, working alongside five of the Institute's top coaches.

'To be able to secure the services of someone of Charlesworth's stature will not only benefit the new breed of AIS coaches, but the athletes as well-they will be the ultimate winners,' Mr Peters said. 'Especially pleasing is being able to have someone of Ric's stature stay in Australia, and pass on his wealth of knowledge and experience to the next generation of coaches.'

The two-time Olympic gold medal-winning coach of the Hockeyroos-and most recently an author-says he's excited about the challenge of helping some of Australia's finest young coaching talent cope with the rigours of the profession.

'I see my role as being a critical friend,' Charlesworth said. 'As a former national coach I can empathise with their situation and provide them with advice based on my experience. It's difficult for the new (especially) national coaches to cope with the workload. Whether it be dealing with their respective national bodies, state associations, athletes around the country or international organisations, somehow they have to finesse the whole thing together and get it right.'

The 49-year-old, who was formerly AIS women's hockey head coach from 1993 until after the successful Sydney Olympics campaign, will assist Jackie Gallagher (triathlon), Martin Barras (sprint cycling), Simon Roskvist (softball), John Sumegi (sprint canoeing) and Adrian Santrac (women's soccer).

'They run their respective programs and I provide them with expert and interesting lateral input,' Charlesworth said.

Charlesworth's AIS role is funded by the Federal Government through the Australian Sports Commission.

The AIS is a major program of the Australian Sports Commission and this year is celebrating 21 years of excellence.
