A run to remember

The Federal Minister for the Arts and Sport, Senator Rod Kemp, encouraged all Australians to put on their running shoes and celebrate the ANZAC spirit at the launch of the Lest We Forget Run 2003.

'The Lest We Forget Run 2003 will be held simultaneously all over Australia, in capital cities, regional centres and country towns as a way to celebrate and remember the ANZAC spirit,' Senator Kemp said.

'The eight kilometre course is in recognition of the distance our ANZAC heroes were required to run upon landing in Gallipoli.

'Sport has been a defining characteristic of Australian society for at least as long as the ANZAC tradition. And these two elements of our national psyche have much in common-a sense of fair play and teamwork, a preparedness to accept a challenge, and grace under pressure.'

This year, the organisers-Athletics Australia and the Returned and Services League (RSL)-have set themselves the challenge of getting 10,000 Australians out and running. For further information visit: www.lestweforget.com.au.

'To date, 63 communities across Australia have signed up to host local runs with all profits donated to the RSL to be used for welfare related activities and charities,' Senator Kemp said.

Community sporting events such as the Lest We Forget Run are fundamental to the key theme of the Government's sports policy-Backing Australia's Sporting Ability: A More Active Australia.
