Currumbin Tennis Club wins national Ausport Prize

The Australian Sports Commission today announced Currumbin Tennis Club on the Gold Coast as the winner of the prestigious Ausport Prize for its outstanding contribution to the Australian sports system.

Currumbin topped a high-quality field of sports organisations to win the award, presented by the Federal Minister for the Arts and Sport, Senator Rod Kemp, as part of the Sports Commission's Ausport Awards, at the Melbourne Convention Centre.

The Ausport Prize is awarded to the best of the 10 Ausport Awards category winners announced at the Awards. Currumbin earlier won the Club Development category of the Awards, recognising excellence and good practice in sports organisations.

Currumbin Tennis Club is a community-based organisation of about 110 members, run by a team of dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers.

Australian Sports Commission CEO Mark Peters said Currumbin Tennis Club had shown great initiative and innovation in developing sport facilities and services.

'It is a well-managed club that exemplifies the goals of the Ausport Awards to improve participation and club membership in sport at all levels. Currumbin is a club worthy of replication by other organisations. Its work has led to strong growth in participation for adult and junior tennis players,' Mr Peters said.

Mr Peters said the Ausport Awards showcased some of the outstanding initiatives in Australian sport under the objectives of the Federal Government's sport policy, Backing Australia's Sporting Ability - A More Active Australia.

'This is a significant national awards program for the Australian sporting industry, and the awards themselves aim to recognise, reward and showcase good practice in the sports system,' Mr Peters said.

A full list of Ausport Award winners is attached.
