Federal Government's Street Active Program back to boost numbers in sportThe Federal Government's commitment to funding exciting street sports will continue in 2003 through the Australian Sports Commission's (ASC) 1800 Reverse Street Active program. The 1800 Reverse Street Active Program provides opportunities for children aged 6 to 14 to get into the street sports including skateboarding, in-line skating and freestyle BMX through Learn to Ride sessions held at numerous locations around Australia. This successful and popular program attracted more than 6,300 participants last year. The first Learn to Ride coaching sessions this year will be staged at Fox Studios in Sydney from 12 to 27 April at 10.30am to 7.30pm daily. National sporting organisations Skate Australia and Freestyle BMX involved in the delivery of the 1800 Reverse Street Active program have selected Australia's best and first-ever accredited coaches from skateboarding, in-line skating and freestyle BMX, to coach sessions. The Federal Minister for the Arts and Sport, Senator Rod Kemp, says the 1800 Reverse Street Active initiative is a part of the government's commitment to the development of sport at all levels though its sports policy, Backing Australia's Sporting Ability-A More Active Australia. Australian Sports Commission Chief Executive Officer Mark Peters says the 1800 Reverse Street Active program provides opportunities for community groups and councils to play a leading role in the development of street sports within their local area. 'Community groups and councils across Australia are establishing skate parks and facilities to provide recreational space for these sports,' Mr Peters said. 'Our message is that street sports are a legitimate and valuable part of the Australian sporting scene.' Register for 1800 Reverse Street Active Learn to Ride sessions at www.streetactive.org.
