Australian Sports Foundation delivers $100 million milestone

The Australian Sports Foundation (ASF) has reached a significant milestone in its 20 th year, topping the $100 million mark in grants allocated to sports and communities across the country

The Federal Minister for the Arts and Sport, Senator Rod Kemp today announced the $100 million milestone, with over 63% of funds being allocated since 1996.

The ASF was established by the Australian Government in 1986 to assist fundraising for the development of sport. The ASF is a deductible gift recipient listed in the Income Tax Assessment Act and donations to it in support of registered projects initiated by sport and community organisations are tax deductible.

“This year marks two significant milestones for the ASF. Not only is it celebrating 20 years of operation but the ASF has allocated over $100 million dollars to Australian sports and communities,” Senator Kemp said.

“The ASF is unique in that it is the only organisation able to offer the tax advantages for sport fundraising and to assist the development of sport in Australia.

“Significantly, the ASF’s business has grown by more than 200 per cent in the last four years with some 420 separate projects currently registered,” Senator Kemp said.

“A key component of the activities of the ASF is the ‘Sport Incentive Program’ which aims to increase opportunities for Australians to participate in sport and/or excel in sports performance.”

The ASF, supported by the Australian Sports Commission, is a non-profit public company with an independent Board of Directors, chaired by Mr Cory Bernardi. It works to assist eligible non-profit organisations that have a sporting objective to fundraise for projects in five main categories: facility development; sport equipment; sport development; team travel; and hosting a major sporting event.

Senator Kemp praised the ASF for the diversity and number of projects they are assisting to develop sport at the community level.

“Organisations like the Australian Sports Foundation and the Australian Sports Commission continue to make important and lasting contributions for more Australians to access sport and physical activity opportunities at a community level.”
