Former Olympic champion to visit local Canberra school

A special partnership between EnergyAustralia and the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) called AIS Connect will see former Australian swimming champion Petria Thomas visit the Mt Stromlo High School in Waramanga, Canberra today.

The AIS Connect partnership will see AIS athletes from a range of sports at the Institute undertake a series of planned visits, appearances and talks at community organisations, schools and significant Canberra events.

AIS Connect ambassador and Athens triple gold medallist Petria Thomas welcomed the AIS partnership with EnergyAustralia as an important opportunity for athletes to contribute to the community.

‘This is a great opportunity for AIS athletes to give something back to the Canberra community that has been so supportive of the AIS and taken great pride in the achievements of its athletes since it opened its doors in Canberra nearly 25 years ago,’ Thomas said.

‘Canberra is an important part of our lives as athletes and we hope that we can continue to contribute to, and play an active role in, the Canberra community in partnership with EnergyAustralia.’

EnergyAustralia General Manager Retail Tim O’Grady said EnergyAustralia was proud to partner with the ASC and the AIS in the Canberra community.

‘Having recently joined the Canberra business community EnergyAustralia could think of no better way to demonstrate our commitment to the community as a whole than by partnering with the AIS,’ Mr O’Grady said.

‘The AIS has been a welcome part of the Canberra community for a long time now. Through the provision of competitive energy services, EnergyAustralia hopes it too can play an integral role in contributing to the community and the lives of all Canberrans.’

Thomas will speak to students in the gymnasium at Mt Stromlo High School, Waramanga from 9.40-10.00am.

Excellent photo / film opportunities will be available to the media. Thomas will be available for interview at 10.00am.
